Berlin-Brandenburg
Airport Region

The area surrounding the future Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (BBI) is to become East Germany’s region with the strongest economic growth over the years ahead. From 2011, the BBI airport will be one of Europe’s most important aviation hubs providing an impressive schedule of direct international flights. With shorter flying times, especially to Asia and Eastern Europe, Berlin-Brandenburg International is set to boost the economy in the German Capital Region.

Another business location asset of the Airport Region is the proximity of two trans-European roads. The E30 route, which runs from the Atlantic to Moscow via Warsaw and Minsk, crosses Germany and serves the new BBI airport. Several technology centers, the R&D facilities run by two universities and three institutes of technology, as well as modern plants operated by renowned international businesses are strung along this business corridor like pearls on a necklace. Another major trans-European route serves the Airport Region: it leads northwards to central Berlin and southwards to Lusatia - Brandenburg’s main energy-producing region - and then to Wroclaw, Dresden and the Czech Republic.

Two institutes of technology (BTU Cottbus and Hochschule Lausitz) are within a one hour’s drive from the BBI airport. They cater for skilled junior employees that would appreciate to work for companies who invest in the Airport Region.

In addition, the nearby towns of Schönefeld, Königs Wusterhausern and Wildau form one of Brandenburg’s regional growth areas.

Last but not least, suitable business premises and centers of expertise are available for all key industries in the Airport Region:

  • Aviation services are located in Schönefeld, while the “aerospace belt” extends up to the nearby town of Ludwigsfelde;
  • The solar energy industry concentrates in Frankfurt/Oder (“Germany’s solar capital city”);
  • Many communications and creative industries are located in Potsdam;
  • Biotechnology is represented in Luckenwalde, Potsdam and Hennigsdorf;
  • Modern energy technologies are in the Lausitz-Spreewald region;
  • Rail technology businesses operate plants at a traditional industry center in Brandenburg an der Havel;
  • Logistics companies benefit from three state-of-the-art freight villages along the Berlin autobahn ring.

An excellent public transport network guarantee outstanding connections between Berlin and the Airport Region.
