Business Location: Potsdam-Mittelmark District
The Potsdam-Mittelmark district is located in Southwest Brandenburg and stretches from Berlin to the Saxony-Anhalt border. It includes the independent city of Brandenburg an der Havel and part of Potsdam, the regional capital.
Innovation characterizes the district: the Fraunhofer and Max Planck institutes are operating R&D facilities in Potsdam-Golm; the Institute for Grain Processing successfully markets products developed at the Bergholz-Rehbrücke research center; TZT (Teltow Technology Center) and TGZ Belzig (TGZ) have been supporting young entrepreneurs for many years.
More than thirty industrial parks with a total surface area of 350 hectares are available in the district. The Golm Innovation Center (GO:IN, one of the most modern technology facilities in the region) was developed jointly by the Potsdam-Mittelmark district and the city of Potsdam.
Businesses from the stone, metal and food industries, as well as craftsmen and a variety of service providers also play a major role in the district’s economy, which is characterized by SMEs. Moreover, agriculture and in particular fruit-growing have a long tradition in Potsdam-Mittelmark.
Tourists can discover attractive landscapes via the R1 European cycle route, as well as via a series of waterways and hiking trails that make tourism an important industry in Potsdam-Mittelmark. The German national hiking day is to be held in the district in 2012.
Moreover, Potsdam-Mittelmark enjoys a first-rate transport infrastructure that includes two of Germany’s major autobahns (A2/A10 and A9) as well as a tight network of well-developed roads that guarantee fast connections to the nearby cities of Berlin, Potsdam and Brandenburg an der Havel.
As part of the booming German Capital Region, the Potsdam-Mittelmark district offers companies various advantages. The boroughs of Kleinmachnow and Stahnsdorf, as well as the city of Teltow, join Potsdam and Werder/Havel to form a dynamic economic region characterized by highly productive companies from a variety of industries (electronics, biotechnology, communications, optics, food and metal industries), as well as by an increasing number of R&D facilities and cultural institutions.
