Energy state Brandenburg
Berlin-Brandenburg's energy industry has a long tradition and belongs to the region's most important business sectors. With around 15,000 jobs, it is one of the biggest employers in the region. Around 350 predominantly medium-sized enterprises belong to the energy technology sector.
Since 1990, the branch has evolved into a highly efficient industrial sector of enormous variety. Today, Brandenburg holds the second place in brown coal mining among the German federal states. It is at the forefront of renewable energy use, wind power usage and bio-fuel production.
Vattenfall Europe Mining & Generation, one of the leading European energy suppliers has its seat in Brandenburg. Regarding turnover and employment, it is one of the biggest companies in Eastern Germany. The enterprise delivers more than half of its brown coal electricity to customers out of Brandenburg. But also within Brandenburg, the brown coal will remain one of the pillars of a secure electricity supply in the long run.
Regenerative energy as a job motor
Production and usage of regenerative energy already counts for 40% of Brandenburg’s power consumption. Brandenburg has established around 1,600 jobs within this sector of growing economic importance.
Innovative technologies and networks
Predominantly medium-sized enterprises offer different energy technologies: from power plant technology and heat pumps, geo-/solar thermal power to fuel cells, network technology and bio-fuels.
The connection with other branches opens enormous growth perspectives. Ideal conditions for expansion are provided by the research capacities at BTU Cottbus and the Centre for Energy Technology (CEBra) as well as by numerous regional and national networks.
